This January, we’re inviting you to make a New Year’s resolution that will truly stick by taking part in Buy Nothing New Month (1-31 January, 2026). Are you up to the challenge?

Our recent research shows that 76 per cent of UK adults agreed that, as a country, we buy too much stuff.

The challenge is simple. For the month of January, make a commitment to buy nothing new, other than essentials like food and medicines.

Discover the joy of repairing an old item, building positive habits and reducing the strain on your wallet – and the planet – and sign up today.

Why buy nothing new?

If everyone lived as people in Britain do, three planets would be needed to sustain the world’s population, according to the WWF.

The truth is, everything that is made new comes not only with a financial price tag, but with an environmental one too. By once again taking part in Buy Nothing New Month, you can:

  • Save money: Resisting the lure of the sales and avoiding impulse purchases could save you hundreds and keep your bank balance on track
  • Try something new: January is a time for embracing new hobbies and learning new skills. Take on the challenge of repairing clothes instead of discarding them, upcycling household items or rent instead of buying.
  • Live more sustainably: Every new item you buy has an environmental price tag, from the carbon emitted during production to the water and energy used in manufacturing and transportation. Buying less helps to reduce waste and conserve resources.

How can you help me?

This year, we’re swapping the dopamine hit of buying new for determination to actively “under-consume”.

Changing our behaviour isn’t easy, so we’ll be sharing weekly tips, guides and advice to support you on your Buy Nothing New journey.

Whether that’s by repairing textiles instead of sending them to landfill, or considering second-hand tech for the first time, we’ve got all the support you need to join us and Buy Nothing New for a whole month!
