Hedge planting at the Old Station Yard in Dunkirk, Aylsham will be undertaken by the ACE Nature and Biodiversity Group (N&B) in early 2026 to provide a more natural and bio-diverse boundary.
And as part of the conservation project to enhance this area of scrubland and wild space, the bramble (rubus fruticosus), has been cut back as it has damaged the post and rail fence which is in serious need of repair.
The OSY is the site of Aylsham North railway station which was demolished after its closure in 1959. Set alongside Banningham Road and Drabblegate, the site leads on to the Weavers Way, and the carpark.
The purpose of the project is to maintain the site with a view to attracting a wider range of biodiversity in terms of plants, birds, insects, and invertebrates to the area.
The Norfolk Wildlife Trust have advised us on a cutting regime to maintain the pathway though the site. The N&B group work closely with Aylsham Town Council’s groundsman to maintain the area making it easier for walkers to cross the site, keeping the seeds in the soil away from the paths ready for the following year’s growth.
This autumn, David Mitchell, from the U3A Photography group, went to the site to capture the autumn colours for us.
