The aim of the group is to help preserve and enhance natural habitats that improve soil health and attract wildlife throughout thetown. We do this via projects which are agreed by Aylsham Town Council. Currently our projects are:
Henry Page Road verges and the Community Orchard: With the help of the Aylsham Groundsman, we manage a regime of cutting, raking and plant surveys in May/June and in the autumn. Planting of native species bulbs and plants will begin in the autumn.
Old Station Yard (pictured): The aim is to enhance the small scrubland wild space, by naturalising the site to increase biodiversity. Each May we carry out a plant survey. Aylsham’s groundsman ensures that the pathways are clear, making it easier for walkers to cross the site. This also enables the seeds in the soil away from the paths, to flourish ready for next year’s growth.
In January 2026 with the support of the Tree Council, and volunteers from the High School and local residents, we planted a new native hedgerow along the Banningham Road edge of the site. Planting of native species plants will begin in the autumn.
Aylsham Nature Trail: Aylsham Town Council were successful in receiving a grant from Broadland District Council to enhance the biodiversity and environmental value of green spaces in the town, including the Community Orchard, the Paupers’ Graveyard, through the Community Garden to Aylsham Parish Church. The new nature trail will have QR Codes at each of the sites with information about each of the green spaces. The Community Shed are working on bird and bat boxes which will be put up in the autumn.
Later this year there will be guided walks and activity events, including bulb planting.
Gardens Matter in Aylsham: We know that our gardens and verges provide a network of mini habitats linking residential areas to the countryside. Native trees, shrubs, flowers, ponds, compost heaps and deadwood attract birds, insects, frogs, voles and shrews to our environment. So, watch out for our annual Aylsham Wildlife Friendly Garden Competition.
